La espirometría es la exploración básica de la función pulmonar; sin embargo, no ha alcanzado tal condición entre los médicos de Atención Primaria, posiblemente porque su acceso casi siempre ha estado en manos de los especialistas. Sin embargo, la implantación progresiva de espirómetros en los centros de salud ha posibilitado que cualquier médico tenga acceso a ella, lo que implica además la necesidad de interpretarla. El primer problema al que se debe enfrentar el médico que va a interpretar una espirometría es su realización. En esta exploración, el paciente es un sujeto activo que se convierte en clave para lograr un registro fiable sobre el que se van a tomar decisiones de índole diagnóstica y terapéutica. El técnico que hace la espirometría, se convierte en la persona más importante en este paso, correspondiéndole a él la responsabilidad de decidir sobre la calidad del registro. Esta breve guía práctica no pretende ser un extenso tratado de fisiopatología respiratoria. Pero sí pretende ser una guía de bolsillo que oriente al profesional, especialmente el que se dedica a la Atención Primaria, a adquirir unos criterios básicos a la hora de enfrentarse a sus primeros registros, ayudando paso a paso a lograr una sistemática de interpretación.
